Destination Overview

Surrounded by the dark blue, forested peaks of Banjaran Titiwangsa, around 200km north of KL, the CAMERON HIGHLANDS form Malaysia’s most extensive hill station.

Cameron Highlands holidays offer excellent nature walks, a pleasantly cool climate, plenty of fresh air, and the chance to sample locally grown strawberries or relax with tea and scones.

The Highlands cover around 700 square kilometres, cut by the twisting Route 59, which links the three main townships. Southerly Ringlet is a busy little marketplace surrounded by modern housing estates, close to a couple of attractions but otherwise forgettable. Some 15km northeast, Tanah Rata is the Highlands’ main town and favoured base, at the core of walking trails and flush with places to stay and eat; 5km further north, scruffier Brinchang offers more of the same, plus several nearby fruit and vegetable farms.

Heading north from Tanah Rata, the administrative center of the Cameron Highlands, the main road winds through mist-shrouded hills before emerging onto the tricky 18-hole Cameron Highlands Golf Course, one of Malaysia's best places to tee off. Leaving behind the golf course, the main Cameron Highlands road heads through the area's second biggest town, Brinchang, and past butterfly gardens and strawberry farms. Thanks to the area's elevation, it's one of the few places the fruit can be grown in Malaysia. The biggest of the batch is the Kok Lim Strawberry Farm, which lets visitors head to the fields and pick their own. Not far away is the Time Tunnel, filled with curios and collectables assembled by owner and history buff See Kok Shan. The split-level museum is often full of nostalgic Malaysians and Singaporeans who come to check out objects that remind them of their childhood.

Cameron Highlands

Holidays to the Cameron Highlands are very popular during the March to May hot-season school holidays and so can get very busy at this time.

With hills in every direction, the weather in the Cameron Highlands is unpredictable, and you can expect rainstorms even in the dry season. It makes sense to avoid the area during the monsoon itself (Nov–Jan), and at major holiday times if you want to avoid the crowds. Given the 1000m-plus altitude, temperatures drop dramatically at night – whatever the season – so you’ll need warm clothes, as well as waterproofs. The temperate climate remains constant year-round, but the coolest part of the year is December through February, when temperatures can drop as low as 10 C (50 F).
