Krabi

Like much of South Eastern Asia, Southern Thailand does not really have four distinctive seasons.

For the most part, the weather can be classified into two seasons that you will experience during your Krabi holiday; rainy and dry (and variations thereof).  Krabi’s climate and the timing of the rainy and the dry season is influenced by its location on the Western coast of the long, skinnny peninsula of land connecting Thailand and Maylasia (right across from the more well known and well touristed Phuket).  The weather during your holiday to Thailand visiting Krabi will depend on which way the winds are coming from; from the Northeast during one half of the year (dry season) or from the southwest during the other half of the year (rainy season).  These dates are just a guideline; as such, the rainy season could begin or end a little earlier than expected, or rain could intrude into your holiday in Thailand during the dry season.

The area gets its winds from the North East, bringing with it clear skies and less heat than at other times of the year.  The area is sheltered by mountains and fanned by fresh sea breezes, making temperatures more moderate during this time of year than other parts of Thailand.  This is a great time of year to plan your Krabi holidays!During this time, December, January and February mark the high tourist season, and if you are planning your Thailand holiday to Krabi province during this time, you are advised to book accommodations well in advance.April brings with it the popular celebration of Songkran across Thailand, and Krabi is no exception.  The celebration of the traditional Thai New Year is sure to be an event to remember is it falls during your Thailand holiday.  A holiday with spiritual intentions, Thais celebrate by visiting temples and cleaning house for the new year, as well as the traditional dousing with water, which is bestowed on locals and visitors alike to cleanse away the old remnants of the past year. The Krabi Boek Fa Andaman Festival is unique to the region, and is celebrated annually between November 16th-18th.  The name of the festival translates to “opening the Andaman Sea” and it marks the beginning of the official tourist season with festive parades, performances, boat races and other colorful activities.

Rainy season here in Krabi is even rainier than the rest of Thailand.  Moist, southwest winds bring more days of rain (sometimes heavy), but also significantly cheaper prices and less tourists scrambling for prime spots on busy beaches. As a guideline, August and September mark the wettest months during the year, and high waves are possible at this time, making activities in the water more dangerous. The Festival of the Tenth Lunar Month is celebrated in Krabi each year in August.  It is a festival to honor ancestors, as it takes place during a time when it is believed that their spirits can return to Earth.  Families make elaborate offerings of food for their ancestors and bring them to monasteries in colorful processions. The Chak Phra festival is another great experience to have during your holiday to Thailand.  It falls around October, and it is celebrated by a procession pulling a statue of Buddha on a colorful, decorated float through the streets.  It is a festive time that celebrates Buddha’s return to Earth.
