Destination Overview

The 280-mile-long panhandle known as Namibia's Caprivi Strip only exists as is because Germans thought the Zambezi would lead to the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately the Victoria Falls got in the way - but today this does provide the benefit of acting as a gateway to Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls and Botswana's Chobe National Park.

Stretching improbably eastward toward Zimbabwe the Caprivi Strip is typified by expanses of mopane and terminalia broadleaf forest, punctuated by shonas or fossilised parallel dunes that are the remnants of a drier climate.

The Caprivi is surrounded by 4 perennial rivers – Chobe, Kwando, Linyanti and the mighty Zambezi! The regional capital is the town of Katima Mulilo, which is located on the Zambezi River. There are no other major towns in the area, although it is fairly densely populated and travellers will encounter numerous villages. Because it's relatively unknown as a tourist area, you'll get the feeling here that you’re truly alone with nature. This part of Namibia is the closest thing to Botswana's Okavango Delta, and it shelters much of the same game: elephants, the aquatic lechwe and the rare sitatunga antelope, the uncommon roan and sable antelope, and, hardly ever seen in Namibia, big buffalo herds.

Getting to the Caprivi strip is not easy. From Windhoek, it is over 17 hours driving. In fact the Caprivi strip is closer to Livingstone in Zambia than it is to the capital of Namibia. To get to Susuwe Island Lodge for example, you fly into Livingstone, then take a small plane to the Namibian immigration post at Katimo Mulilo, then fly to the Immelman airstrip nearby, the once infamous Doppies SADF forward base, and travel by road and river to the lodge. Alternatively, you can drive 4 hours to the border and then a further 2 hours to the lodge.
