Destination Overview

Namibia’s Central Highlands is a reference to a rather large area of land that encompasses  everything from the Erongo Mountains which lie north west of Windhoek all the way to the Waterberg Plateau National Park in the north east of the country.

The rolling hills of untamed bush are home to a number of farms that have given up their cattle in favour of game and generating income from tourism rather than farming. This is good news for Namibia’s endangered wildlife. There are a number of destinations in the Central Highlands that are often overlooked and yet are very worthy of being explored.

The Waterberg Plateua and 41,000 hectares of surrounding land was declared a Nature Reserve in 1972. crowned with lush vegetation, the Waterberg Plateau's brick-red sandstone is a striking sight and there is nothing quite like it in Namibia. Although you won’t find traditional big wildlife attractions such as lions or elephants there is wildlife here that are unique to the area and that remain protected by the thick bush that blankets the land. The Waterbury Camp is nestled at the base of the cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau. Towering some 200m above the surrounding landscape, and the cliffs show off fascinating rock formations which serve as a breeding area for a number of endangered animal species. The Waterbury Plateau is a 4 hours and 30 minutes drive from the international airport at Windhoek.

The majestic Erongo Mountains rise about 1000 metres from the ground and can be seen as you approach the area from afar. Formed as an eroded relic of a volcano that was active some 140-150 million years ago, it collapsed in on its magma chamber, allowing the basin to fill with slow-cooling igneous material. The resulting hard granite-like core, that withstood the erosion, washed away the surrounding rock. This volcanic range is best known for its rock paintings and caves-  particularly the 50m-deep Phillips Cave. The small nearby town of Omaruru on the Omaruru River lies on a flat plain dominated by the mountain range and it offers accommodation for this visiting the Erongo Mountains. The Erongo Mountain range is a 3 hours and 30 minutes drive from the international airport at Windhoek.
