Back to Detail Page

COBBLERS COVE

Located on the platinum west coast of Barbados, Cobblers Cove offers a haven of grace and tranquillity to discerning travellers. The beachside hotel has 40 suites, each individually decorated and open to the ocean and tropical garden surroundings. Serving the finest food on the island, The Camelot Restaurant is a destination in itself

In keeping with the heritage of Barbados, the history of Cobblers Cove is entwined with that of the Caribbean sugar industry and began with the Haynes family, one of the island's first sugar barons, who settled in Barbados in 1647. Joss Haynes was a sugar cane planter and a politician who was active in local government throughout his career. As was common amongst the Barbados elite, the family built a weekend beach retreat where they could escape the island's rugged east coast - they chose Cobblers Cove. The original plantation house was built in 1943 and called Camelot, a name still retained today as one of the signature suites in the Great House. In the following years the house was extended and the gardens developed and after Joseph’s retirement, he and his wife moved to Camelot where they lived until his death in 1963. In 1968, Cobblers Cove was sold to Alan Godsal and his wife, Lady Elizabeth, descendants of the Colleton family, another prominent sugar family who were also founders of the state of Carolina. Cobblers Cove was converted into a hotel in 1968, and by the 1980s the property was well established as a luxury boutique hotel with a reputation for fine food and wines, becoming a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection of hotels and resorts. More recently, Alan’s son, Hugh, took on the role of overseeing the management of Cobblers Cove and alongside his wife Sam, remains closely involved in the development of the property and its direction for the future.
